PACS Gateway & Pending DICOM

Receive scans straight from your hospital PACS and use them in a new case.

If your hospital uses the CustoMED PACS Gateway, scans can reach CustoMED straight from your imaging system, without exporting them yourself. This article explains how scans arrive and how to use one in a new case.

How it works

  1. Your radiographer sends the study from your PACS to the CustoMED Gateway, the same way they send to any other destination.

  2. The Gateway uploads the study to CustoMED, where it waits as a pending scan. Its status shows Processing while it arrives, then Ready (or Failed if the upload didn't complete).

  3. Your Organization Admins receive an email when a scan upload succeeds or fails.

Using a pending scan in a case

  1. Start a new case. See Create a New Case.

  2. In the upload area, click Remote import. The Upload File to Start window opens.

  3. The Select from Pacs tab lists each scan with the end of the patient ID (the rest is hidden), the date and time it arrived, the series ID and its status. Click a scan marked Ready.

  4. In Type in the full patient ID (MRN), enter the patient's full ID. This confirms you have the right patient before the scan is opened.

  5. Click Use Selected DICOM. CustoMED downloads the scan into the upload area.

  6. Pick the series and click Upload All, as with any other scan. Your browser anonymizes the files before they are uploaded to the case.

If your organization also imports from Powershare, the window opens on the Import from Powershare tab, where you find unclaimed studies by patient ID. Click Select from Pacs to switch to the PACS list.

The Upload File to Start window with the Select from Pacs tab, Cancel and Use Selected DICOM. Use Selected DICOM stays disabled until you choose a scan and type the full patient ID. No scans are waiting in this example

If the ID doesn't match, you'll see "Patient ID verification failed. Please check the ID and try again."

Note: Every organization role except Technician can use pending scans, because Technicians can't create cases.

How long pending scans are kept

Pending scans that aren't used are deleted after a period set for your organization, so use them promptly. Contact CustoMED support if you need to know or change your organization's period.

Setting up the Gateway

The Gateway is installed and registered once per site. During registration, the Gateway shows a code that an Organization Admin or Organization Back Office user confirms. Contact CustoMED support to set up a Gateway for your site.
