Moving Implants & Planning Elements

Move, rotate and swap implants and other planning elements, and what the starting position means.

This article explains how implants and other planning elements behave in the editor: the implant you see when planning opens, moving and rotating, swapping templates and the side panel hierarchy. For the editor layout and views, see The Editor & Viewer.

The starting position is not a recommendation

The implant and its position when you open the step are a starting point for your plan. This is not a clinical recommendation. You can swap the template and move the implant as needed. Final implant choice and placement are always the user's responsibility.

Move and rotate an implant

Click the implant in the 3D view. The controls you get depend on the view.

In a free view

A gizmo appears on the implant. Drag an arrow to move it or an arc to rotate it. Click an arrow briefly to move 0.5 mm.

In a fixed Sagittal, Coronal or Axial view

Click a view button (Sagittal, Coronal or Axial) to switch to anatomical controls at the edges of the view. They are labeled with anatomical directions (S/I, A/P, M/L) and rotation names that match the procedure:

Procedure

Rotation names

Knee (TKR)

Rotation, Varus/Valgus, Flexion

Shoulder (RSA, ASA, humerus)

Version, Inclination, Dialing

Hip

Rotation, Inclination, Anteversion

Other procedures

Axial, Coronal, Sagittal

  • Click a step arrow to move 0.5 mm or rotate 1 degree.

  • Press and hold to repeat the step.

  • Drag for a continuous adjustment.

With the keyboard

With the implant selected, press the arrow keys to nudge it 0.5 mm. Press Esc to clear the selection.

In the CT slice views

The selected element also shows controls in the slice views. Drag along a line to move in that direction, drag the arc to rotate in the slice plane, or drag the center dot to move freely.

Constraints

  • Movement may be limited to certain directions.

  • Rotation may be constrained.

  • Behavior can vary by procedure and element type.

If you move something by mistake, click Undo or press Ctrl+Z (Cmd+Z on Mac).

Swap an implant or template

  1. Select the implant.

  2. In the side panel, choose a different template (if available).

Note: Template swaps cannot be undone with Undo. To go back, choose the previous template again.

For template sets and PSI types, see Implant Templates & PSI Design.

Implant groups in the side panel

Elements in the side panel are grouped. You can:

  • Show or hide the entire implant group.

  • Show or hide individual parts and screws.

  • Swap some parts individually in supported procedures.
