Plan Only vs. Plan + PSI

Choose whether CustoMED produces a surgical plan only, or a plan plus a patient-specific guide.

For some procedures, you decide when you create a case whether CustoMED should produce a surgical plan only, or a plan plus a patient-specific instrument (PSI). This article explains the two options and how they change the workflow. See Create a New Case.

The two options

Option

What you get

Choose it when

Plan and PSI

The surgical plan, a guide designed from that plan, and the files to print it.

You will use a patient-specific guide in surgery.

Plan Only

The surgical plan and its outputs, with no guide. The PSI Design step is skipped.

You need the planning and measurements, but not a physical instrument.

Where you choose

  1. When you create the case, open the Case Details section.

  2. In Case Output Configuration, pick Plan and PSI or Plan Only. The field is required.

Case Details with the Case Output Configuration list open: Plan and PSI or Plan Only

The choice is shown as Case Output on the case card and in the case panel.

Which procedures offer the choice

  • Reverse Shoulder Arthroplasty (RSA)

  • Total Knee Replacement (TKR)

  • Hip Resurfacing Arthroplasty (HRA)

  • Total Hip Replacement (THR)

Other procedures with a guide always use Plan and PSI. Analysis procedures such as Lower Extremity Analysis (LEA) never produce a guide.

Note: In hip cases (HRA and THR), the guide is designed for the femur. The pelvis is planned without a guide.

Changing your choice later

If you can manage the case, you can switch the option later in Case Details while the case is in progress. Switching archives the current PSI and export, and the case goes back to Surgery Planning. Once the case is approved, the choice is locked.

What changes in the workflow

  • Plan and PSI: at the end of Surgery Planning you click Generate PSI, refine the guide in PSI Design, then approve the case on Approve. After approval, the output pack goes to production with the status Ready for Production. See Downloading Files & Plan Reports.

  • Plan Only: at the end of Surgery Planning you click Confirm Surgery Plan and go straight to Approve. After approval the case is Completed. You get the plan outputs and the Plan Report, but no guide files and no production steps.
